Dongnae yaryu

Dongnae yaryu
This is one of the folklore mask dances, which is performed in fields about the‘full moon day', January 15th by the lunar calendar to pray for the peace of the village and a good harvest. It is composed of two parts. The first part is composed of marching through the street and group dancing. The actors and common people enjoy delightfully together with folklore music and a green and red silk lantern (cheongsachorong) in marching through the street. They also perform the crane dance, the hip dance, the hunchback dance with fun in the group dancing. The second part is a genuine dance drama.

The dance drama has four acts(leper, yangban, servant, old person), of which the second act, that is the act of the yangban(the aristocratic class) is the most important. In the act, a servant named Malttugi makes fun of the members of Yangban showing resistance against them.

The masks used in this dance drama are eleven and made mainly of gourds. In it, four percussion instruments and a melody instrument are used. It is still a play reflecting the mirth and enthusiasm of common people.
